TIPS FOR ANXIOUS TRAVELLERS

As the holiday season begins I thought I’d take a couple minutes to (finally) share my tips for anxious travellers. If you follow me on instagram you’ll know that I have a few triggers when it comes to travelling. whether it be by car, plane, bus or ship, there is always some degree of pre-planning, stress and anxiety involved.

Over the years I’ve learned a few things that have really helped to make the whole process a lot smoother. Something to remember though, you can plan and prepare as much as possible but at the end of the day, you have to reach a point where you understand the things you can and cannot control.

Tips:

Book flights based around your body

If you’re a morning person, book a morning flight but if you’re better in the afternoon or evening, book a later flight. I personally struggle in the mornings as my body needs time to wake up, adjust and settle properly. I have a whole morning routine and early flights do not suit me. If I can, I’ll book a late morning or afternoon flight.

Try mindful breathing

One of the most calming things I’ve found is to take a few deep breaths to reset your mind, body and soul. It’s a really simple, easy step but has a huge impact on me.

Make a playlist

Music has a different effect on everyone but it has the ability to alter mood and emotions. Try to make a playlist that will suit your mood or relax you. The other option is to swap music for podcasts, it’s a personal choice!

Comfy clothes

Never underestimate the power of a knitted jumper, comfy pants or top. I’ve found that if I put my favourite hoodie on I feel warm, safe and calm.

Aromatic mists, oils or balms

Two of my go-to products are from Perfect Potion. I found them in an airport during a really stressful stop over. The first is the chakra balancing balm, a unique blend of 25 essential oils. I put a little on my wrists and over my heart. The action combined with the balm is extremely relaxing. The second is the ‘relax’ aromatic mist. You can spray this over your whole body but I generally spray it over my face and head. I pack both of these in my handbag whenever I travel and use it before I go to bed too.

Travel with someone if possible

If possible, try to coordinate your travel with a friend, partner or family member. I love travelling with my husband because he’s a great support when I’m anxious. He’s also a great person to talk to or help get my mind of things and remind me to have fun.

Don’t be on time, be early

I’ve found taking a few minutes to do some yoga, get a coffee or simply take a couple minutes for myself is a great way to start any trip. If you’re rushing around or late, it adds unnecessary stress and anxiety. The more intentional or mindful you are, the better you’ll feel.

These are all personal things I’ve found to help along the way but it’s daily personal journey. Try what resonates with you and leave what doesn’t. I hope at least one tip makes your next trip a little smoother.

Until next time,

Jess x
